I had a similar experience. Flashplayer was not working. I went to Adode and
downloaded the tar.gz file for Flashplayer 9 - unpacked it and tried
sudo ./flashplayer-installer
as directed - got no errors

but flashplayer still didn't work
at adobe I got more information
and I manually copied the libflashplayer.so and flashplayer.xpt
(there was a file named libflashplayer.so already in the folder but
flashplayer.xpt was lacking)
using sudo at the command line
from the folder on my desktop into
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins

I did that while I had the manual install instructions open in firefox

things hung for a few seconds and I tried to close some windows to free things
up (I had two nautilus windows open to
help me locate the plugins folder)

I tested the installation with the Adobe test and it says it is fine.

Perhaps you will find something helpful in the bug report file.

I will attach it now

libflashplayer.so and flashplayer.xpt to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins while firefox
was running"
