I did a system update on Ubuntu 8.10 and rebooted.

After the installation, the system reported a broken package with
"libgconf2-4".

Hence I restarted my computer thinking that I could install the broken
package afterward.

Now when I boot up my system this error message appears:

(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

And the whole desktop doesn't load (i.e. no menu bars, no icons, no
desktop background), just a beige colored screen.
