Hi peter,
You description here mentions and "end trace" which leads me to believe
there is some sort of panic or oops that may be happening. Could you
try booting with the 'quiet' and 'splash' options removed (Press
'Escape' key at the 3 second pause by Grub bootloader. Then press 'e'
(edit) on the buggy kernel entry, followed by 'e' again on the kernel
line. Then remove the 'splash' and 'quiet' keywords and press 'b' to
boot.) Could you take a digital photo of your screen with the panic or
oops error messages and attach it to this bug report? Thanks.
