Can't tell whether it is a problem with kvm or with X:
host is running Xubuntu Jaunty with newest version of kvm.
Commandline:

Guest runs Ubuntu Jaunty. While both were Intrepid, I could use full
screen resolution 1680x1050 with VESA driver. Now only cirrus works.
