Thanks for your report. This might be related in some way to the
problems mentioned in#164804. Could you please check if this solution is
helpful:
1. Open a terminal window by Ctrl-Alt-F2
2. At the prompt type "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" without the quotes (do that
also in all the following commands) to stop the Gnome display manager
3. On the next line type "sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-applets
gnome-applets-data"
4. If you get an error message you will need to also type "sudo dpkg
--configure -a"
5. Kill all processes of gconfd-2 by typing "sudo killall gconfd-2"
6. Go to /tmp: "cd /tmp"
7. Delete the temp files of gconfd: "rm -r gconf-$USERNAME$ mapping-$USERNAME$
orbit-$USERNAME$" where you substitute $USERNAME$ with your username
8. Restart gdm by typing "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start"
9 Login again to gnome and see if the problem persists
