I used KernerCheck to upgrade the kernel
(http://kcheck.sourceforge.net/) and I haven't had a problem since.
And, as a bonus, the new kernel supports Sony memory stick readers.

One confounding thing, though.  At the same time I removed Firefox 3 and
installed the Beta of 3.5.  I think it was the kernel upgrade that
solved the problems, though.
