OK, thanks. There are a couple of things we can do to work this problem

First, can you perform a CD verification at boot? Please refer to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CDIntegrityCheck for more information.
There is a chance of a bad download or bad burn, always best to make
sure we are working with good media.

Next, is there any chance you can try the alternate CD and report back
if it works any differently? The alternate image is available from
http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.10/

Oh, that's intriguing! I guess it would be helpful to know more about
the target disk. Were there existing partitions or was it "clean"? The
more you can tell us about the configuration of the target disk (how it
was connected, what was on it before the install attempt, how you wanted
to partition it), the better.
