UPDATE: Under System > Administration > Login Window > Security (tab) I've disabled the "Enable Automatic Login" i had during the installation process of Ubuntu 9.04, with the result now that when booting up i pause at the login/password stage before entering my system WITH sound. Therefore, disabling this function has seemingly fixed the issue.
