I can also confirm that nicotine is crashing x. My xwindows session freezes a few minutes after starting nicotine, so I go to tty1 and killall nicotine and go back to the x session and voila everything is working again! I'd switch to mucous except it doesn't deal with firewalls as well as nicotine does...
