I have been playing with Gparted and finally got the installer to work. I don't know what exactly solved the problem so I'll list everything I did.
I changed the disklabel to gpt, restarted and the installer failed. I changed the disklabel back to msdos, restarted and the installer failed. I manually setup a primary ext3 partition, and swap partition. Then I formatted the ext3 partition in Gparted and added a boot flag.
