I think this is still an issue!
I encounter a 2,7 GHz singlecore CPU being almost roasted at 100% usage
while watching a simple online streaming...
I'm on an Asus P4P800S-X mainboard with a Pentium 4 CPU and Intel
Chipset. IDE0 is single Master P-ATA WD3200AAJB, IDE1 is single Master
P-ATA DVD-RAM GH22NP20. 80-pole wires, black plugs connected to devices.
IDE Interface is Intel 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev02)
(prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP]), according to sysinfo output. Kernel is
2.6.28.-11-generic, installed from Iso Live CD. NIIIICE appearance, by
the way, I really like it.
So: I find it impossible to activate DMA despite of correct BIOS
settings.
Trying to configure hdparm, for a test, temporarily, by adding:
sudo hdparm -c1 -d1 /dev/sda
I recieve:
/dev/sda:
setting 32-bit IO_support flag to 1
HDIO_SET_32BIT failed: Invalid argument
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
IO_support = 0 (default)
HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
German Ubuntuusers Wiki suggests the following workaround:
"The module providing DMA mode must be put in first place in
/etc/modules. That depends on the chipset that comes along with your
mainboard, eg. with a nforce4 Ultra it would be: amd74xx [...] ."
But how do I know for my chipset? I am at the limits of my wisdom.
