If the bug were important, we could spend some effort cross-porting
the fix from Debian.

Are you saying that the bug is not fixed in Debian ?  Are you a Debian
user ?  If you are a Debian user and the bug is still present in the
Debian version (ie, the Debian BTS is inaccurate) then you should use
the Debian BTS to inform Debian of this.

`grub (Debian) Fix released' means that Debian think they have fixed
it (although `Fix released' is probably optimistic since I presume
that this corresponds to a fixed version being in sid or perhaps
etch; Launchpad does not fully capture all of the version-specific
information available in Debian).

`grub (ubuntu) Confirmed' means that we think the bug is still present
in Ubuntu.
