Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-24-generic
The Bug: The machine may work fine for as much as an hour. The first symptom I notice is that the KDE clock stops ticking when I have the mouse and keyboard idle. The clock will resume ticking only if a key is held down or the mouse is in use. The system remains usable for perhaps another hour or so (though the clock gets progressively more inaccurate), but eventually I get a hard freeze and have to manually restart the system. This bug may be related to bug #272247. I wrote an ubuntuforums post with more details: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1171019. Hardware: Gateway 7508GX laptop. Chipset is ATI RX480M. Uses PhoenixBIOS 66.06.00. Further specifications can be found at http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/7000Series/5333nv.shtml. Occurs on: Kubuntu or Ubuntu 8.04.2 with all updated packages installed (as of 6/05/09). Also occurs on a clean install of Debian Lenny. Error happens whether proprietary or open source ATI driver is used. Does not occur on: Kubuntu 8.10, which I used from December 2008 until early May 2009. Also used Kubuntu 8.04 from June 2008 to December 2008 without issue. Does not seem to occur on: A clean install of Kubuntu 8.04.2 without updates, Kubuntu 8.04.2 with all updates except 2.6.24-24 kernel. Log information: I have attached 4 logs, as suggested by looking at bug #272247. I am at your disposal if you need further information.
