Ok. After playing around a while with alsa, I managed to make my
soundcard unusable. Now, on every restart the soundcard was muted and I
had no control on the volume, as stated above.

Now I followed this guide:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012

I found out, that "sudo alsa force-reload" did the trick. Immediately
the soundcard was able to output audio files.

After the next restart there was no sound, again. The pulseaudio mixer
was set to 0. I set it to 100 and voilĂ , I had audio output.

I thought, now it's solved. Let's try a restart. After the restart I had
the first problem again. A muted soundcard with no possibility to
unmute. Pulseaudio mixer and any other mixer weren't unmuted or set to
0.

No question, "sudo alsa force-reload" did the trick again.

But this should only be a temporary solution. Pulseaudio should play
better with alsa, or alsa with pulseaudio, or both with the soundcard.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

  ubuntu jaunty 9.04,
  updated from ubuntu intrepid 8.10,
  newest updates,
  pulseaudio 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.1,
  alsa-utils 1.0.18-1ubuntu11

  In intrepid pulseaudio and alsa worked fine. Now they are broken.
  There are several similar bug reports i read before. But this seems to be
another problem.

  After a clean restart (no suspend or hibernate) there are two possible
  ways for pulseaudio and alsa, and the decision, which one is gone, seems
  to be random:

  * 1st way
  One time playback of audio and video files works fine in vlc, totem, amarok,
firefox flash addon.

  * 2nd way
  And the other time playback of audio files looks fine, but there is no sound.
Perhaps it plays on a channel/card that's not existing. Perhaps something is
muted. Perhaps there's a misunderstanding between pulseaudio, alsa and the
soundcard.

  Notice: beep (via apt-get install beep) always works fine via soundcard
  (not the system speaker).

  I checked several mixers: gnome-volume-control, alsamixer. Everything is
  unmuted and set to 100.

  * Pulseaudio Mixer
  Master => unmuted, 100

  * Alsa Mixer (Intel)
  Master, Master M, Headphon, PCM, Line, CD, Mic, Phone, IEC958 P, PC Speak,
Aux => unmuted, 100

  * Oss Mixer
  Speaker, PCM-2, In-gain, Digital-1 = unmuted, 100

- What does't work
+ What doesn't work
  * "alsamixer -c 0" for setting the "front" volume to "100", because there is
no "front"
  * purging and reinstalling alsa and pulseaudio

  It's driving me crazy. Rebooting 3 times for a working audio playback is
  not what i wanted.

  Here are my sound devices:

  aplay -l
