Jadoka's fix of manually assigning an essid works for me on a Thinkpad
T61 running Debian Lenny under kernel 2.6.26-2-686.

I am not using Network Manager but an interface definition in
/etc/network/interfaces. In this case the line 'wireless-essid <essid>'
has no effect.

lshw identifies the wireless hardware as 'PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN
[Kedron]'
