This is because partition 8 on this disk overflows the disk slightly (by about 10KB, if I'm doing my arithmetic correctly), and libparted rejects such things.
I note that the Linux kernel simply truncates partitions like this now: http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/10/9/219 Perhaps libparted should be able to do the same?
