Hey dougalf, I forgot about this post, my apologies I should have closed it. I never actually figured out the problem so I am glad you informed me on what it was. I did not like Intrepid anyway so I reverted back to Hardy and upgraded to Jaunty when the time came. Everything has been working fine since then. However, I do not use my desktop much anymore since I recently got a laptop. Since it is my own computer I do not need to have anything user friendly for others in the house, so I am running fluxbox with Arch. Anyway, I think at some point it was a little bugged with Jaunty, but that is common with gnome file associations anyway. And yes, it was text from the editor. Thanks for your reply, I guess we can leave it at solved.
