But opening them as zip-file is in most cases also not the choice. I do not know how it is in Gnome, but in KDE there is the possibility to associate with more then one filetype and sort by priority. I think it is a reasonable assumption that most extensions are used in Firefox, so Firefox would be priority one then and then others follow. So please reconsider your decision.
