I can confirm this problem. I have read about it in other places, and it doesn't sound like it is specific to any type of laptop. But if it is, I have a Fujitsu Lifebook S2110. my brightness buttons used to work (in dapper). I edited the brightness levels in gconf and nothing happened. Also: cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness <not supported> If there is any other helpful diagnostic info, I can post it.
