Good news.

I upgraded a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P from 8.10 to 9.04. The problem with
the Wacom tablet had seemed to extend to general problems with the USB
interface. So, I first plugged in a USB hard drive and copied about 30
GB to it. This would have caused the OS to freeze in 8.10. However,
the next morning everything seemed fine.

I then plugged in a 6x8 Wacom tablet and moved the mouse and pen around
a bit. In 8.10 this, too, would have eventually caused the OS to
freeze. That did not happen, the OS is still happy, but neither the
pen nor the mouse behaved as expected. Initially the mouse would move
the screen cursor as expected, but now it doesn't move the cursor at
all. The pen will move the cursor only vertically.

I opened Gimp, which recognized that a Wacom 6x8 was attached (looking
at Preferences>Input Devices). But neither the pen nor the mouse
behaved properly in Gimp.

I have not done any configuration in /etc/hal/fdi/policy (the wacom.fdi
file) nor any in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Perhaps doing that will make
things work.

At least the OS doesn't freeze.
