This also happens to me! I have an HP DV6000 (DV6646US to be more exactly).
For a while I have relized a randomic behavior on sleep/hibernate on my ubuntu 9.04 . Today i made some test with sleep only and I was surprised that it would wake up instantly if connected to AC power, but would halt if not. That's how it works: 1. it sleeps fine, connected to the power or not, the power light start blinking as expected, 2. then i close de lid. 3. i open the lid 4. it only wake up if connected to the power. If not connected, the blinking light stop blinking, stay like it would turn on again. The CD makes a noise like "i am waking up!" ... but then it stops! It is like it is saying "I wanna sleep, five minutes more pleeeeeeeeease!" And them, if i plug, with the lid already open, it wakes up. Like i gave it a shock and it says: "OK, OK, I AM AWAKE am waking up!
