The problem went away as soon as I uninstalled Tracker, which had been using 100% CPU for several minutes before each lockup.
And then there's this: "Uname: Linux 2.6.27-11-generic i686". So for some bizarre reason, I was still running the Ubuntu 8.10 kernel rather than the 9.04 one (I've now fixed that).
