Thank you for reporting here. Are you using ALSA ? if you go to the terminal and type in "alsamixer" you should get to a screen showing more audio settings, make sure your mic and/or line in is not muted. If you use the arrow keys to navigate through the selections you can increase or decrease the levels with the up and down keys. Let us know if this is any help.
