I think I resolved this, and it may have been a space issue.  (sorry,
I'm a linux newbie)

I originally set up with separate partitions for /boot, /tmp, /home, /usr, and 
/var  with 500MB left for / and everything else.
I noticed that I only have 50MB left after the 9.04 upgrade.
I deleted (what i hope were old) kernels from /lib/modules and redid the 
apt-get dist-update.

Now everything says it's working, but when I initially log in, I get totally 
black screens with a mouse pointer.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace seems to fix this and give me my old X screen with dual 
heads, but I don't know what the initial blackness means.
