Between Ubuntu 7.10 and Ubuntu 8.10, hotkey handling has been in a state of flux due to changes in the underlying architecture. As of Ubuntu 9.04, these issues should all be resolved, and the Fn+F7 hotkey on ThinkPad laptops is known to work correctly.
