Kubuntu Hardy, 2.6.24-23-generic, Thunderbird 2.0.0.21. Also seeing this problem. I tried Peter's suggestion of adjusting the sound buffer, and found that when the buffer is changed (and thus the sound system is restarted), sounds in thunderbird play just fine. However when thunderbird is restarted, no matter what setting I use for the buffer, the problems recurs (but goes away once more after the buffer setting is changed again).
