I have additional information on this, courtesy the Ubuntu forums.
Someone else with the exact same laptop did some experimenting and found
that this bug is related in some way to the optical drive. Here is what
he has to say:

"Well I am happy to report that this is not my harddrive.

I have isolated it to the dvd drive which makes me feel better. If I pop
in a cd or keep the drive bay open the messages stop. If I close the dvd
drive bay (without a cd in the drive) the message appear.

Still trying to figure this one out, but I am glad I won't be
experiencing any corruption of my harddrive."

I am unable to confirm this currently as I'm in the process of replacing
my standard Ubuntu install with CrunchBang...
