I tried it on nvidia- and intel-based GPUs. Both under
metacity+compositor and compiz. For the intel-based GPUs I used the new
UXA/DRI2 architecture and the old EXA one. The flickering was only
present for under the combination intel-GPU with EXA. All other settings
worked without flickering. Thus this is a video-graphics driver issue
and not a notify-osd one. I linked this to xf86-video-intel
