Sounds like a driver and/or hardware issue to me, *not* a NetworkManager
bug.

If nm-applet is trying to re-connect, then that means Network Manager
saw the disconnect and is trying to do the right thing...but since the
driver / firmware on the card is in a bad state, all bets are off.

A few other questions... does the same problem occur if you use your
router's default image?  Does it occur with other access points?  Do you
always see the firmware error log message when it happens?
