Sounds like a driver and/or hardware issue to me, *not* a NetworkManager bug.
If nm-applet is trying to re-connect, then that means Network Manager saw the disconnect and is trying to do the right thing...but since the driver / firmware on the card is in a bad state, all bets are off. A few other questions... does the same problem occur if you use your router's default image? Does it occur with other access points?
