Public bug reported:

Reported via ubuntu-bug, so I assume all relevant system information is
already attached.

Sounds does not work at all inside X. No GUI apps can play sound, and
no terminal applications launched inside xterm can play sound either.
aplay -l shows nothing, and alsamixer refuses to start up when launched
in an xterm.

*However*, outside of X and at the console, *these apps work fine*.
aplay -l shows my sound device, alsamixer works right, and programs like
mp3blaster (a curses based mp3 player) work just fine.

Whether or not X is running, sounds works on the console. I can do
aplay -l from an xterm (and see no device), then ctrl-alt-F2 to the
console and do aplay -l and see my device and use it. Then I alt-F7
back, and sound doesn't work.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if I can provide more information.
