Thanks for your bug. That's not gedit crashing so no need of a
backtrace. In fact having "crash usually causes X to restart, sometimes
the machine hangs and a hard boot is required" is not a gedit bug. It's
likely due to linux or xorg. An app should not be able to crash your
xorg or box, if it does that's linux or xorg to blame, not the
application. Do you have any mention of that incident to
/var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog?
