Uh, sorry I spoke too soon it seems. It is not really a problem with gedit as it seems. I just now found out that the files I'm trying to create are not getting syntax highlighted. But I have someone else's PHP files which are getting syntax highlighted right when I open them.
And yes, I tried selecting PHP manually from the highlight modes.
