I managed to install kfreebsd-i386 by using a variation of this guide:
http://blog.zelut.org/tag/unetbootin/

1) Download
http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/lubi/unetbootin-freebsd70rev146.sh
2) chmod 755 unetbootin*sh && sudo ./unetbootin*sh installmode=usbdrive
targetpartition=/dev/sdX1 formatpartition=yes
3) sudo mount -o loop debian-20090117-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso /mnt/
4) sudo mount /dev/sdX1 /media/disk
5) sudo cp -RvLu /mnt/* /media/disk/  && sudo sync
6) Boot into the usb disk
7) Don't select any packages, partition as usual and select standard
installation from DOS drive
8) Select "no" on most questions. Some questions will appear on other consoles
(alt-f2 or alt-f3). Most weird: The root password prompt was on console
alt-f2, but I had to enter the password on console alt-f1.
9) Finish up and enjoy your new freebsd installation
