At first I thought it was a power issue. 550W over long  distance cable. But, 
no, that's not it. 
It could be an x-server thing, but I've just come back after an hour (during 
which time I had expected the machine to restart) and here I am replying to 
you. It' really strange.

And this doesnt happen with other operating systems? For me this sounds
like an hardware issue.

Does the system shut down properly or is it just like pulling the plug
and turning it on again?
