I have similar problems with my T42. But my symptoms are slightly different
1) No mousepad, trackpoint or any attached USB mouse is working 2) USB port has problems with all kind of devices, but works sometimes without problems 3) I have the same shutdown problems as jerry Removing "quiet splash" works for me as well.
