Another tidbit...

I just tried booting from the previously-working kernel (2.6.28-11) and
drive will still not spin down / sleep.  I wonder if it's an issue
elsewhere, perhaps hal or gvfs.  Attached is a list of updates that
occurred between the sleep command working and not.
