As pre request
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postgresql-8.3/+bug/387682/comments/4)
$ ls -l /etc/rc2.d/S20*

gives

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2009-05-06 11:26 /etc/rc2.d/S20apport ->
../init.d/apport
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2009-05-06 12:24 /etc/rc2.d/S20dkms_autoinstaller ->
../init.d/dkms_autoinstaller
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2009-05-06 13:06 /etc/rc2.d/S20exim4 ->
../init.d/exim4
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2009-05-06 11:26 /etc/rc2.d/S20hotkey-setup ->
../init.d/hotkey-setup
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2009-06-22 11:05 /etc/rc2.d/S20kvm -> ../init.d/kvm
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2009-06-22 13:43 /etc/rc2.d/S20libvirt-bin ->
../init.d/libvirt-bin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2009-06-22 09:49 /etc/rc2.d/S20smartmontools ->
../init.d/smartmontools
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 2009-06-11 09:37 /etc/rc2.d/S20winbind ->
../init.d/winbind

I'll see if "sudo mv /etc/rc2.d/S19postgresql-8.3
/etc/rc2.d/S20postgresql-8.3" reliably fixes the problem next time I
reboot.
