It seems to be enabled per default since Karmic but while the power
saving should be minimal every time the sound output is used a loud
clicking noise is released. If you use headphones you can really getting
deaf through it and I am pretty sure that this isn't beneficial for the
speakers also.
I am using an Intel sound card but I guess other devices may also be affected.
