Just ran into this with gnumeric 1.8.4 on Jaunty amd64 current as of 23jun09.
Attempted to fix the problem using the procedure described above (hacking the glade files for the installed package). The file dialog- stf.glade didn't contain any lines like "<property name="adjustment">0.05 0 1 0.01 10 10</property>" but the file descriptive-stats.glade did, so I made the edit there (as well as in anova-one.glade). Quit and restarted gnumeric.
