Thanks for your offer to help!

However after some changes (uninstalled mplayer, ran Computer Janitor, 
and removed a 2nd user) suspend now works again.
The only difference is that the display flashes up and clicks right 
before everything goes dark, but I hope that's ok.

My log for the now-working suspend is attached.

BTW: I also have problems with low volume of the microphone and with 
sound for some applications and will look for a solution shortly...
