I can't re-test this with my original hardware configuration.  Since I
first lodged this bug, I've upgraded my optical drive from a CDRW/DVDROM
to a CDRW/DVDRW.  The system is now running Jaunty 9.04 32 bit.

For what it's worth, I can confirm that the system correctly recognizes
and operates the optical drive with both of the following kernels:

Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-13-generic

Aside from the optical drive, the rest of the hardware specs are the
same as when I originally wrote this up

Dell Dimension E521
2 SATA hard drives
1 SATA Optical drive (CDRW / DVDRW)
AMD 64 X 2
ubuntu i386 desktop version
