This is a problem fixed a long time ago. This happened because by default smplayer passed options like -contrast 0 -brightness 0 -hue 0 and so on to mplayer. That should actually provide a good picture (it does in my computer) but some people reported high contrast or similar problems in the video. I guess this is due to a bad configuration of the settings in xvideo. (The problem happens only when using xv as video output)
