I can also confirm this bug on a Thinkpad T400 2767-WC8 (as above): Muting the device with the laptop's mute button or even muting through the mute button of kmix, alsamixer, etc. does NOT work, but the volume sliders work perfectly.
The laptop is freshly installed with Jaunty. The strange thing is that muting with the mute button used to work, but only for a short(?) time (muting was not one of the functions I checked for working). I also cannot find a "PCM-2" device in alsmixer. There's just "Master" and "PCM".
