It's out of scope for Ubuntu to modify autoconf in this way, and this
kind of change should definitely be made upstream. Please consider
submitting your idea to the upstream mailing list. While an Ubuntu
maintainer could do that for you, they will be unable to champion your
idea quite as well as you could.
