Sorry it took me a while. I just figured out how to do the "partial upgrade"
and installed the version you mentioned from the PPA.
OpenOffice.org 3.1.0
OOO310m11 (Build:9399)
I had the same flickering result with this new version. Btw, in this
try I am using Xfce4 via xubuntu-desktop package. Again, no compositor
running.
