I was just going to post the same thing as part of the 100 paper cuts. It's to learn now that I can use the esc key whenever I mess up the username but I've been using Ubuntu for almost 4 years now and I didn't know this.
Maybe it should be made more obvious as naoli said or at least the system could check if there was a user in the computer with the name you just entered.
