- the upgrade process could wasn't properly shuting down some previous udevd 
process and was failing at udevd restart

  all dependencies on udev (hal) were stalled.
  manually killing the udevd process that was preventing the start unlocked the 
situation.
  
  from the messages displayed during the upgrade, some rc(-like ?) scripts
  were called for stopping udevd, they reported no error, but the
  subsequent start would fail (address already in use or like)
  
  the huge amount of locked dependencies would prevent most end-user to
  solve this ...
