The first proposal in this bug is also my #1 Paper Cut! But I would
phrase it differently:

Ubuntu's default desktop setup looks way too geeky,
it should look more like good 'ol familiar Windows. :-)

The average Ubuntu novice user has previous experience with MS Windows.
The standard layout of Windows desktop hasn't changed much since the
introduction of Windows 95 almost 15 years ago! That is:

* only one panel at the bottom
* "Start"/"Windows" button on the far left (no need for the application menu)
* Status and notification items on the far right
* Launchers and open apps in between
* NO Workspaces (they only confuse our average Joe)

The first thing I always do when I set up Ubuntu on a client's computer
is to recreate the Windows standard layout. It eases the transition by
removing one more hurdle.

By the way, also Mac users are confused by the two-panel-layout, because
the top-panel behaves completely different than the menu bar in Mac OS.
I'd say that the confusing is eaven bigger for Mac-heads.

So nobody(!) benefits from the current default settings. It's just a
"trivially fixable usability bug that the average user would encounter
on his/her first day of using a brand new installation of Ubuntu Desktop
Edition." ;-)

Simply change the default layout in Ubuntu, so that it resembles
(visually and behavior-wise) Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Kubuntu, … It's so easy to do and
would make switching to Ubuntu so much user-friendler.

P.S.: The few(!) geeks who really love the two-panel layout can easily
add panels to their liking. But the default setting is supposed to
*attract* new users from the Windows-world, not scare 'em off.
