So I take back what I said earlier. It doesn't work, even with the
modified asound.conf, nor does it work with no asound.conf/.asoundrc.
With no asound.conf, I get basic functionality for one application. In
other words, basic 2-channel sound works, one app at a time on a card
which supports hardware mixing. But any attempts to use surround sound
of any type results in a "device not available" from the xine engine.
I'd always been under the impression that the message meant the device
wasn't there. A bit of strace shows that the device is just locked. So
my card supports hardware mixing, but the alsa drivers don't seem to be
able to use it.

Bottom line is I've lost both the surround sound capability I've had for
a few years now since upgrading to feisty, as well as being able to use
multiple sound-related apps simultaneously, whatever the root cause
might be.
