So I take back what I said earlier. It doesn't work, even with the modified asound.conf, nor does it work with no asound.conf/.asoundrc. With no asound.conf, I get basic functionality for one application. In other words, basic 2-channel sound works, one app at a time on a card which supports hardware mixing. But any attempts to use surround sound of any type results in a "device not available" from the xine engine. I'd always been under the impression that the message meant the device wasn't there. A bit of strace shows that the device is just locked. So my card supports hardware mixing, but the alsa drivers don't seem to be able to use it.
