"Invalid"? I call that "Wontfix" :-) By system connections, I presume you mean connections defined in /etc/something? I tried to do that, but couldn't really get it to work properly.
But just in case other people stumble by, looking to solve similar problems, I've now replaced NetworkManager with wicd, which works really nice for me.
